“DAUGHTER”
A Twenty-First Century “JAIRUS” Moment
Mark 5:21-43 | 3/29/2020
This is a unique moment on the Divine Calendar; and the weightiness of His Word for this hour is significant. When something happens on a global scale, the World takes notice; but my friends, it is The Church that needs to pay the most attention. Because when something happens that impacts every man, woman, and child on the planet, you can be assured that THE SOVEREIGN OF THE UNIVERSE is INVOLVED…in one sense, He is certainly NOT the CAUSE of this PANDEMIC, for that goes back to The Fall of Humanity, but He is MOVING in the midst of it.

Mothers Day 2019 | "…Filled With Compassion”1 Kings 3:16-28 | Dr. Tobey Montgomery 5/12/19
The depth of God’s compassion for us is seen in that natural, yet almost mystical tie between a Mother and her child, even in the womb. We would call it maternal bonding; God calls it eternal Love and Mercy! His infinite love and mercy that can best be described as that deep, instinctual bond between a mother and her unborn, or newborn, child.
IT IS THIS KIND OF MERCY THAT MOVED THE HEART OF SOLOMON. IT IS THIS MERCY THAT MOVES THE HEART OF THE KING! AND, IT IS THIS MERCY THAT MOVES THE HEART OF GOD! 1 Kings 3:27 NIV - Then the king gave his ruling: “Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him; she is his mother.” Hallelujah! “SHE IS HIS MOTHER!” Up until this moment in the narrative, this woman was known only as “a prostitute,” but now, with one Ruling from the KING, one edict from the Throne, AND THIS woman, this prostitute, is forever changed: “SHE IS HIS MOTHER!” Her identity, her destiny, her tomorrows, her biography is forever changed! This is what God does, in a moment, in an instant, in His Mercy…THE KING forever changes who we are. No longer a prostitute, no longer a slave, no longer a thief, no longer a murderer, no longer a stranger…but CHILDREN OF GOD! SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF THE KING! In His Mercy, He changes forever who we are! |

Easter Sunday | "...The Books Were Opened” Revelation 1:17-18; 20:11-15 | DR. TOBEY MONTGOMERY 4/21/2019
The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the central doctrine of our Faith. It is the most momentous event in History and the most precious hope for Humanity. Without the resurrection, Christianity is just another philosophy: noble, but powerless (1 Corinthians 15:14). However, the Resurrection of Christ is that singular moment in which the unmitigated evidence of His Divinity becomes clear (Romans 1:4). It is the assurance that our sins are forgiven and eternal life has been imparted to those who trust in Christ (1 Corinthians 15).
The Apostle Peter said that God has “given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:3).” On this holiday, this holy-day, I am borrowing a little from my grandfather, a Baptist Preacher, and others, in that I want to direct your attention to the last book in the Scriptures and the culmination of all things. For it is here that the Resurrection affords all of us Hope, as we simply trust that Jesus is who He claims to be.
In Revelation 1, John the Apostle, arguably the best friend of Jesus, has an unveiling of Christ that is so stunning and so overwhelming that he collapses under the weight of the Glory that he is witnessing.
Revelation 1:17-18 NIV84 – When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “...Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.”
The Message of The Gospel, and thus the Message of Easter, is one of LIFE and HOPE! Here, Jesus declares that this to John when he says, “Do not be afraid.” Likewise, Jesus pronounces that his resurrection is verification of His power and the demonstration of his authority over Death, Hell, and The Grave.
As we move forward in the Scriptures to Revelation 20, we find ourselves as witnesses (through the eyes of the Apostle John) into the final courtroom scene, as it were…Judgment Day as some have expressed it.
Revelation 20:11-15 NLT - And I saw a great white throne and the one sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from his presence, but they found no place to hide. 12 I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books.13 The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds. 14 Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. 15 And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.
Revelation 20:12 NLT – …The books were opened, including the Book of Life...
This passage is the New Testament mirror of what the Prophet Daniel saw:
Daniel 7:9-10 NIV84 – As I looked, ‘thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze. A river of fire was flowing, coming out before him. Thousands upon Thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the books were opened.
An obvious question arises, “What books?” Here we have a witness in both the Old and New Testaments of a court-like setting (thus the idea of judgment) and books being opened. Now, I don’t know about you, but if I’m going to court, I want to know what they’re looking for and I want to be prepared. What books? The Scripture gives us some insight into these books; I would propose that there are at least four. FOUR BOOKS that have to do with LIFE; the DISCOVERY and DESTINY of Life; the LOSS of Life, and the GLORIOUS RECOVERY of Life.

Palm sunday | “YOUR KING…” Matthew 21:1-16 | DR. TOBEY MONTGOMERY 4/14/2019
When palm branches or palm trees are mentioned in the Scripture, it is in relationship to victory. For example, when Solomon built the temple, he gave the artisan instructions as to how the interior decorating ought to be done, he had on the inner walls palm trees carved out of cedar wood (2 Chronicles 3:4-6). When Christ entered Jerusalem, the crowds waved Palm Branches acknowledging His triumph…even if they did not fully understand the moment.
John 12:13 VOICE - So they gathered branches of palm trees to wave as they celebrated His arrival (shouting): Hosanna! He who comes in the name of the Lord is truly blessed and is King of all Israel.
In Revelation 7:9, those who overcame the Adversary and this wicked world, have Palm Branches in their hands as a testimony to the Victory of the Lamb! Therefore, Palm Sunday is a Day of Victory, Triumph, and of Celebration. We are to give PRAISE, and in fact, to do so LOUDLY! J
Matthew 21:8-9 MESSAGE - Nearly all the people in the crowd threw their garments down on the road, giving him a royal welcome. Others cut branches from the trees and threw them down as a welcome mat. Crowds went ahead and crowds followed, all of them calling out, “Hosanna to David’s son!” “Blessed is he who comes in God’s name!” “Hosanna in highest heaven!”
This procession hearkens back to the Celebration led by King David himself when the Ark of the Covenant entered Jerusalem…
2 Samuel 6:14-16, 20-22 NLT - And David danced before the LORD with all his might, wearing a linen ephod. 15 So David and all Israel brought up the Ark of the LORD with much shouting and blowing of trumpets. 16 But as the Ark of the LORD entered the City of David, Michal, the daughter of Saul, looked down from her window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she was filled with contempt for him… 20 When David returned home to bless his family, Michal came out to meet him and said in disgust, “How glorious the king of Israel looked today! He exposed himself to the servant girls like any indecent person might do!” 21 David retorted to Michal, “I was dancing before the LORD, who chose me above your father and his family! He appointed me as the leader of Israel, the people of the LORD. So I am willing to act like a fool in order to show my joy in the LORD. 22 Yes, and I am willing to look even more foolish than this, but I will be held in honor by the girls of whom you have spoken!”
When the Presence of the Lord comes near, there must be a lifting up of Praise to Him…a declaration of His Glory: the Fame, Renown, Honor, Brightness, Majesty, and Splendor of God. Every Ministry FLOWS OUT OF WORSHIP!
2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV84 - And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect {Or contemplate} the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Creation – A Scientific Perspective pt. 2 Colossians 1:16 | Chris Montgomery 3/3/19This is the second part to a series that we started a couple of months ago here at The Cathedral. We are diving into the magnificence of God and how we as intelligent species have the unique ability to understand and grasp even a small glimpse of God’s Power.
This series aims at demonstrating a clear and rational framework for the Existence of God through Scientific Observations. "In the beginning God created the Heavens and The Earth" Genesis 1:1 It is remarkable once when we stop worrying about the influence of Man and start relying on the love of God. All we have to do is look around us and see the beautiful world that He created for us. It take more faith to not believe in God than it does to believe in him. We see Design in every aspect of nature! From the depths of the oceans, to the tops of the mountains; from the expansive jungles and forests, to the driest of deserts. There is life and wonderfully designed life at that! Created by an all Powerful, unfathomable, LOVING GOD! "For by Him All Things: were created. Things in Heaven and on Earth, visible and invisible. whether thrones or powers, rulers or authorities; ALL THINGS WERE CREATED BY HIM AND FOR HIM" Colossians 1:16 If we are teaching a Powerless Gospel to our students, then we are not teaching the Gospel, we teaching a falsehood. |

“I AM MAKING EVERYTHING NEW!” Revelation 21:1-6 | Dr. Tobey Montgomery 12/30/2018Corporately, 2019 will mark the 75th year of the ministry of the Patten Community of Faith. It has been seventy-five years since the powerful revival that birthed the work here in Oakland. Even the building in which we worship serves as a marker this year: 2014 will mark the 55th year of the Cathedral. Through faith, sacrifice, and sheer determination the worship, preaching, and ministry through this facility has been serving the Fruitvale Community for over a half-century.
However, my friends, we have not been called just to “be here.” We have been called to “LOVE here.” We must LOVE this Community, or we cannot serve them…much less LEAD them to the Savior of their Souls. John 13:34-35 NIV - “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” His Table reminds us of His Newness: We are a NEW CREATION, recipients of His NEW COMPASSION, Heirs of His NEW COVENANT, and Keepers of His NEW COMMANDMENT! “THE NAME…” Matthew 1:18-25 | Dr. Tobey Montgomery | 12/16/18Hallelujah! “The Name JESUS” Announces IDENTITY. It anticipates ABILITY; it activates AUTHORITY; and finally, The Name of Jesus grants us ACCESS to…
ETERNITY. Matthew 1:21 NIV – “…The name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
John 20:31 NIV - But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. |

“The Genealogy…” Matthew 1:1-17 | Dr. Tobey Montgomery | 12/9/18As Believers, it is vital for us to remember and celebrate Christmas as a HOLY DAY, and recognize that this is a HOLY SEASON! This is the celebration that God came near in the Person of Jesus Christ to save Humanity from sin. It is an invitation to enter into the Presence of our Creator…to worship Him! It is a reminder that the King of Glory came as a baby and was born in the most humble circumstances on the West Bank of the Jordan River so long ago.
Last Sunday, we considered the uniqueness of the Christmas Song: The Song of the Redeemed; a Worship that is PROPHETIC, POWERFUL, and PERSONAL! Beginning today, and for the next three Sundays, I want to continue with the theme of Prophetic, Powerful, and Personal Worship, drawing encouragement from the Christmas narrative found in the first two chapters of the Gospel of Matthew. It may seem odd to us, that Matthew would begin his account of the life of Christ with such a mundane listing of names. It certainly doesn’t sound like something Mark Twain would do, does it? But Matthew isn’t telling a story, he is reporting the facts about a life, and his target audience is Jewish. Therefore, there is a GREAT PURPOSE in this Genealogy. |
“A Sacrifice of Praise…” Luke 2:8-14 / Hebrews 13:8-16 | 12/2/18 |Dr. Tobey MontgomeryHebrews 13:8 NIV - Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
JESUS CHRIST, THE SAME …NOT just Stained Glass or Movie Jesus. NOT a Renaissance painting Jesus. NOT the Philosopher or Religionist’s Jesus. NOT simply the Pageantry Jesus. NOT a Jesus created by Man nor acquiescing to Man’s Will… BUT… JESUS CHRIST, THE SAME: The Jesus of the Scripture…The Living Son of the Living God! The SAME JESUS: Born of a Virgin, Born in Poverty, Witness to the Elders, and our Sinless High Priest. The Suffering Lamb who takes away the Sins of the World, The Anointed One, The Holy One, The Risen One, The Mighty Lion of the Tribe of Judah! SALVATION IS NOT A PHILOSOPHY ABOUT JESUS, IT IS THE WORK OF JESUS!! |

“A Sweet Fragrance…”Ephesians 5:1-4 | Dr. Tobey Montgomery | 11/25/2018
This is what we do. This is work. We take the raw materials that God has given to us, we process it, work it, make mistakes at times (who hasn’t ruined a perfectly good recipe before), give our time, energy, and resources…In other words, WE IMITATE GOD and live a life of LOVE and THANKSGIVING THAT NOT ONLY BLESSES US, BUT IS A BLESSING TO OTHERS!
1 Peter 4:10 NLT - God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NKJV - Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. May THANKSGIVING be MORE than a Day or a Weekend; may it be our LIFESTYLE! |

Purposeful Design | pt. 1 - Cosmic Creation | CHris Montgomery | 11/4/18“For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on Earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him." Colossians 1:16
Shortly after the Creation event, the Universe was made exclusively of hydrogen and helium: 99.999999% of the Universe was composed of these two elements alone. |
Eventually, Red Super Giant and Hyper Giant Stars come onto the scene. These massive stars fuse heavier elements in their cores than lower mass stars. This leads to the creation of heavier elements up to iron. Iron robs critical energy from the core, causing it to collapse. The shock wave, together with a huge swarm of neutrinos, blast through the star’s outer layers, causing it to explode. The resulting supernova creates even more heavy elements, scattering them through space.
'Coincidentally' the Earth, being a terrestrial planet, is abundant with such elements and materials which contribute immensely to advancements of a civilization and modern technology.
However, and very interestingly, humans require iron to live. This begs the question; how does a naturalistic view show how we require billion year old heavy metals in our blood to survive?
If we were to take all of the iron out of your body we could create a 3” iron nail. The material from this was not minded and harvested from the ground but taken from your blood stream and forged into a nail.
If you don't have enough iron, your body can't make enough healthy oxygen-carrying red blood cells. A lack of red blood cells is called iron deficiency anemia. Without healthy red blood cells, your body can't get enough oxygen. So when in the evolutionary process does inorganic material become vital for organic specimens?
Naturalism doesn’t have an answer, but the Bible does. God, the ultimate designer, unfathomably powerful forger and creator of all elements, with such an immense power from his words; stepped down into creation, got his hands dirty, harvested and sculpted out of the Earth, his perfect creation; Man. But unlike his other creation, he didn’t speak him into existence he breathed the breathed life into him! The Bible says that when God created man, he did it in “our likeness”. We are created in the image of God!
We were created by the dust of the ground and we now have scientific evidence that confirms this.
God is using the iron in your body right now to forge and make the foundation of oxygenated red blood cells. He is constantly sustaining you and forging you physically.
But he is also forging you mentality and emotionally. Bringing you through experiences; great ones of happiness and peace but also he is your comforter in times of trials, tribulations, pain, suffering; so that you are broken down, you will be built up stronger and wiser than ever before.

"His Wounds" John 20:24-31 | Dr. Tobey Montgomery | easter sunday 4/1/18
Beloved, Faith is a Decision…NOT an emotion. It is no more the absence of doubt, than Courage is the absence of Fear. FAITH IS A DECISION TO NOT BE GOVERNED BY DOUBT, but rather to TRUST in the VERACITY of the PROMISE OF GOD...based upon the evidence of the ACTIVITY of God: namely, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
o Faith is NOT Irrational…it is TRANS-RATIONAL. o Faith is NOT Blind…it is wide-eyed. o Faith is NOT the failings of a simple mind…but the courageous activity of a rational one. We need not check our brains in at the door, but we do need to BELIEVE. This brings us to someone who has gotten a lot of bad press: the Apostle Thomas. John 20:27 NLT - Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!” |

In wake of the Las Vegas Shooting
“So I Turned To The LORD”
Daniel 9:1-24
Dr. Tobey Montgomery • 10/08/17
As a father, a grandfather, friend, pastor, and a Christian, I find myself deeply grieved by, and profoundly lacking in the ability to address, the evil, cruelty, and wicked displays of violence filling our Land. From Orlando to Chicago, from Charlottesville to Baltimore, from San Bernardino to Las Vegas, Darkness, division, malice, and hatred are seeking to wreak havoc. In addition to these human acts of wickedness, nature itself seems to be groaning in despair as hurricanes have pounded Texas, Florida, the Southeast, and Puerto Rico.
This week I have been reflecting on all of these horrific events and have felt a surprisingly tender reassurance in my spirit. Firstly, even though all of us, and indeed our nation, is and should be, grieving, my friends we do not “grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14)!” Our hope is not in a politician, a sociologist, a psychologist, a businessman, a preacher, a judge, or anyone else. Our hope and our confidence are in the Risen Lord Jesus Christ and His great Love and Mercy for a Lost and Broken Humanity.
Finally, within my heart, I have witnessed the “gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:12)” of the Spirit urging me to call you, the Lord’s People, to prayer. Therefore, in a few moments I will be sharing from the intercession of the Prophet Daniel this morning and like he, Elijah, and the Saints of Old, we will “call upon the name of the Lord (1 Kings 18:24),” desperately seeking His mercy and grace on our nation in this hour.
Matthew 5:9 NIV - Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

- We are praying that the Lord helps each of us to not become immune to the horror of such wickedness, but may our hearts be broken as we “weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15).”
- We are praying that the Lord helps each of us to cry out to the “God of all Comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3)” for the strength of those serving the wounded and brokenhearted; the comfort of those who have suffered such horrific loss; and the righteous “peace and well-being (Jeremiah 29:7)” of the Lord to reign in our nation.
- We are praying that the Lord helps each of us to walk in the Ministry of the Prince of Peace, and become the PEACEMAKERS of our Age who minister in the OPPOSITE spirit of our times. As the Lord Jesus Christ said…
Matthew 5:9 NIV - Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Winter Wonderland 2016
Christian Cathedral hosts an annual Winter Wonderland outreach event in the Fruitvale District of Oakland, CA.
This event impacts our community and neighborhood in a special way, allowing families to "shop" for toys for their children. While the church provides the toys and gift wrapping, the parents can enjoy the dignity and grace of giving the gifts to their little ones.
The event was held on Sunday, December 11, 2016, beginning with an 11:00 am worship service in the Christian Cathedral Sanctuary. Immediately following the service, we hosted a free lunch in Wycliffe Hall, with activities for the children while the parents "shop" for toys in the upstairs "toy rooms".
The event concluded at 4 pm.

Winter Wonderland OutreachOn December 13, our church put together an amazing community outreach event called, WINTER WONDERLAND!
Through this ministry, over 30 members of the local community were fed a hot lunch and provided with 600+ toy. An additional 200 toys were donated to local Fruitvale Head Start program, and 10 local families were "adopted" by members of our church and given food, toys, blankets, and clothing! |
Easter Sunday; I Am The Resurrection 3/26/16The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the central doctrine of our Faith. It is the most important event in Human History, and frankly, and personally, it is far and away the most precious hope of my life.
Without the resurrection, Christianity is just another philosophy: noble, but powerless (1 Cor. 15:14). However, the Resurrection of Christ is that singular moment in which the unmitigated evidence of His Divinity becomes clear (Rom. 1:4). It is the assurance that our sins are forgiven and eternal life has been imparted to those who trust in Christ. (1 Cor. 15). |

Father's DayHebrews 11:1 NIV84 - Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
But faith is not something that operates in a vacuum or by itself. We do not have “faith in Faith” or exercise some spiritual version of “mind over matter.” Faith must have an Object of Focus. In other words, as Christians our Actions must be based upon our Belief in Jesus, and we have Confidence that He will honor the Promise of His Word. |
