Christian Cathedral has had a long vibrant music vibrant music and worship ministry. At present, about 50 church members participate in one or more of our music and worship ministries: the Worship Team, Chorale, Symphonette, Church Studio and Drama. The Worship Team leads the weekly worship in the Sunday morning services as well as the monthly SALT (Serving and Leading Together) service. The Worship Team rehearses weekly for the upcoming Sunday services as well as a sound check before each service. The Chorale is a traditional church choir that sings a variety of choir music from classical to gospel to contemporary worship in the Sunday morning services. The Chorale also performs yearly Christmas and Easter cantatas in conjunction with the Symphonette and Drama ministries to vividly portray through music and drama the message and story of these high holy days. The Symphonette is one of the oldest church orchestras in the country and performs weekly symphonic arrangements of hymns and contemporary Christian worship songs in the Sunday morning services. Comprised of youth, high school, college students and adults, the Symphonette is also a Christian community orchestra that performs Classical and Christmas concerts in Christian Cathedral as well as community service and Christmas concerts in East Bay parks and shopping malls. The Church Studio provides audio sound production for every church service and concert and produces videos of weekly church services and Pastor Tobey’s sermons for online distribution. Any member, new or old, may participate in any of the music and worship ministries by contacting the worship leader of that ministry. Each ministry has its own set of audition or screening procedures for enrollment of new members.

Q: What has transpired in your life for God to direct you into this particular ministry?
A: I am an unusual testimony to the power of music combined with The Word to save and redeem. When I was invited to participate in the Symphonette by Tom Patten, Dr. Bebe Patten’s only son, I was not a born again Christian. As a result of being engaged through music in the church services and Dr. Patten’s preaching, I gave my life to the Lord at an altar call by Dr. Patten. The Lord called me specifically to use my talents in this vineyard. Years later, Tom Patten, my best friend and Best Man at my wedding, was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. That night, God showed me that I would eventually replace him as Music Director of Christian Cathedral. It was not immediate, but He saw me fit to serve Him here in that capacity. Q: How did you become a musician? A: I come from a very musical family. My grandfather played in a New Orleans jazz band in the 1920’s. In the 1950’s, my parents met in the local high school marching band. My father went on to become a four time Grammy nominated jazz trombonist and music educator, and my mother went to receive her PhD in Music History and taught Jazz History at Cal-State Fullerton for 25 years. I started playing the French Horn in the sixth grade and by the time I graduated from high school, I won a 4 year full ride scholarship to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. That is where I met Tom Patten and my future wife, Hannah Harrington, who is also a professional cellist. After committing myself into His service at Christian Cathedral, I entered Cal-State East Bay and received my Masters in Music and a Lifetime Teaching Credential. I have been teaching at Patten Academy since that time and am still actively engaged as a professional symphony musician with most local orchestras, operas and music theater companies. In January, 2016, I hope to finish my Doctorate in Music Education through Boston University. My wife and I have been blessed with two wonderful young daughters. Both are active musically in the many church music and worship ministries and they may someday replace me! |
